Elyria girl says man tried to lure her into his vehicle
ELYRIA —Police are looking for a man who attempted to lure an 8-year-old girl to his vehicle with a $20 bill.
The girl was walking home around 3:30 p.m. Wednesday from McKinley Elementary School when a man pulled his tan “Jeep-like” vehicle alongside her near Sherman and Stanford avenues and offered her the money, police said.
The girl ran away from the vehicle and then told her father about the incident when she got home. Elyria police responded to the area, said Lt. Andy Eichenlaub, but neither the man nor the vehicle could be located.
“The girl did exactly what she should’ve done,” said Eichenlaub.
The girl described the man as being white with a small dark beard, and between the ages of 30 and 40 years old. The vehicle he was driving had newer bars on the front of it, according to police.
Eichenlaub said police will step up patrols in the area with marked and unmarked vehicles.
Elyria Schools spokesperson Amy Higgins said parents within the district were notified of the incident via the emergency phone system, and instructed to tell their kids to remain alert.
