You never thought the day would come — but in a blink, it’s here. Your baby is mobile.
Now instead of frilling her up in adorable Mary Jane sockies, you actually have to think function.
But let’s not fool ourselves. Laces are just not going to be happening for a long while, and straps? Oh yeah, baby’s really going to sit still long enough for you to do the fastening.
Before I broke down and cruised the Payless aisles, I researched some baby shopping blogs. After a few page jumps, I happened upon race car driver Jeff Gordon’s blog. Gordon and his wife, Ingrid, has posted pictures of daughter Ella’s first birthday party, and the little one was wearing the sweetest little booties. After some research I learned they were Robeez, and (thanks, Jeff), they are now are my new obsession.
All leather (upper and sole), these comfy slip-ons require no fuss — they go on basically like socks — and stay on tight with flexible elastic. They come in three sizes — 0-12; 12-24 months; and 2-4. I chose the middle size for my 10-month-old and they fit her well.
There are also styles for boys — with fun things like pirates, ice skating penguins and baseballs.
By no means are Robeez cheap — around $27 a pair — but you’ll want to collect them as if they’re Jimmy Choos. Since shipping is free on Robeez.com with a purchase of two or more pairs, I grabbed up the pink ones with angels and the cream with teddy bears. Not the most practical choices — if I could do it over, I’d get dark solids. The pink ones took some serious scuffing after just one hard play date at the park.
Oh, and all Robeez footwear carry the American Podiatric Medical Association’s Seal of Approval. One more reason to go into baby shoe debt.
