Blogging moms … what’s being said on the Internet

Posted by besttech

McClatchy-Tribune

A weekly glimpse of what moms are saying on the Web.

———

“I sometimes flash forward a decade, to a time when I’ll have a 14-year-old, 16-year-old and 17-year-old. It scares me. Not just the idea of being around so many teenagers (who terrify me on principle), but the idea that I might get stuck in continual worry-wart scolding mode, and that we won’t ever be able to talk about anything important because they know mom will totally freak.

“I can already see a future version of myself, stuck on repeat, worrying them into silence, and somehow I don’t think the fact that I was born this way will be much of a consolation to any...

FDA finds traces of melamine in U.S. infant formula

Posted by besttech

By MARTHA MENDOZA and JUSTIN PRITCHARD Associated Press Writers

Traces of the industrial chemical melamine have been detected in samples of top-selling U.S. infant formula, but federal regulators insist the products are safe.

The Food and Drug Administration said last month it was unable to identify any melamine exposure level as safe for infants, but a top official said it would be a “dangerous overreaction” for parents to stop feeding infant formula to babies who depend on it.

“The levels that we are detecting are extremely low,” said Dr. Stephen Sundlof, director of the FDA’s Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition. “They should not be changing the...

Zoo news from one of Lorain County’s own

Posted by besttech

Our earlier posting about Thanksgiving Day at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo sparked a Lorain County Dad to drop us a line.

Rudy Socha runs a neat Web site, http://www.zandavisitor.com, that’s called Zoo and Aquarium Visitor News. Check it out — if you want to know anything about either activity, trust me, it’s there. And if you find any other sites that might interest or be helpful to our Moms (and Dads!), drop us a line.

And thanks to Rudy for sharing!...

Three ob-gyns and moms are personal experts on multiples

By Anita Creamer McClatchy Newspapers

Julia is the independent one, the sister who takes charge of her fellow triplets — like a little mommy, says Dr. Amy Riley, the real mother of this well-behaved group of 4-year-olds. Vivian, or Vivi, is the smallest, a dainty girl who likes to wear skirts.

“And Alec is the only boy,” says Riley, 40. “He likes to be the leader. He likes trucks and cars.”

“And candy,” says Alec, who’s quick to assert his personality into the grown-ups’ conversation. “I want a mint.”

A reasonable enough request. One mint, coming up.

Talk about multitasking. Of the eight female...

I rank behind the babysitter

Posted by Julie Wallace

So this weekend, my daughter put me in my place as to where I stand in her world.

After spending a ridiculously busy weekend with Mommy — we went to the Cheetah Girls concert on Friday night, she had a College for Kids class at LCCC first thing Saturday morning, gymnastics after that and then a photo session for Christmas pictures — she decided she’d had enough.

She wanted to go to RaRa’s house.

RaRa — translation, Robin, but RaRa has stuck since that was what my baby deemed her — has been our sitter since our daughter was 8 weeks old. To say she is wonderful is an understatement. My daughter loves her, and she loves my daughter and Robin has made our daughter a welcomed part of her family. (And us, too, but I digress...

Kids should climb trees

By Kelcey Kintner NYC MOMS BLOG

So lately I’ve been pretending to be some cool, hip urban mom while secretly scouting out wrap around porches and manicured lawns.

In Westchester.

And Jersey.

And can you even believe I am considering leaving Manhattan?!

For years my husband and I swore we would NEVER leave the city. Did you hear me? NEVER. We love the theater, the amazing restaurants and always having lots of fun, cool stuff to do. But suddenly, despite a great life with our two girls in the West Village, we are just sort of longing to leave.

Our potential dash to...

NJ tween is new voice of Dora

Posted by besttech

By BRUCE SHIPKOWSKI Associated Press Writer

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — When this 12-year-old talks, millions of preschoolers around the world listen.

All Caitlin Sanchez needs to say is “Swiper, no swiping!” Or to summon the powers of her magical backpack.

Sanchez is the new voice of “Dora the Explorer,” one of the world’s most popular cartoons for preschoolers.

She has always enjoyed music and acting, but never expected to be talking to Boots the Monkey, Swiper the Fox, The Map and other characters who appear regularly on Dora’s cartoon adventures.

“When my mother called me on the phone and told me I got (the part), I really...

A feast for the beasts at Cleveland Zoo

Posted by besttech

The Cleveland Metroparks Zoo released some fun facts about feeding the animals on Thanksgiving Day and every other day, too. (The zoo is open on Thanksgiving Day, and it’s free, too.)

Anyhow, here’s the neat little read that the zoo’s public relations folks sent out…

If preparing a big turkey dinner for all your relatives this Thanksgiving has you feeling a little overwhelmed, just imagine how the animal keepers at Cleveland Metroparks Zoo must feel.  They’ll be preparing Thanksgiving feasts for the Zoo’s nearly 3,000 animals – and, yes, there are plenty of picky eaters in the bunch.

To celebrate the holiday, everyone receives free admission to the Zoo and The RainForest on Thanksgiving Day, and special animal feedings will...

Free mammograms offered by Fairview, Lakewood & Lutheran hospitals

Posted by besttech

LAKEWOOD — Fairview, Lakewood and Lutheran hospitals’ W.I.S.H. (Women Into Saving their Health) program, is once again offering free mammograms and clinical breast exams to uninsured women over the age of 40 from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 13 at the West Side Community House, 9300 Lorain Avenue, Cleveland.

This is the sixth W.I.S.H. event offered to Cleveland’s West Side community since the program started in 2006.

“Cost has been identified as the number one reason women do not receive mammograms,” states Susan Grimberg, a registered nurse and community outreach manager for Lakewood Hospital.  “The W.I.S.H. program helps by covering 100 percent of the cost of the clinical breast exam and the mammogram.  The majority of women...
