This past weekend, I enjoyed some father and son alone time when we biked to an outdoor art show in Los Altos. For the uninitiated, Los Altos is a somewhat affluent town in Silicon Valley, and borders Los Altos Hills, which has a good number of monster homes with killer views. The show itself was marketed as being “fine art.” (Which to my untrained eye meant the paintings were bigger and more expensive than those found at other shows.)
If you’re wondering what a dad and his teen son are doing at an art show like this — keep in mind, I’m divorced and on the prowl for a woman. And my son is a teenager on the prowl for food — pizza, soda, ice cream, corn on the cob, homemade hamburger, and whatever else they sell in the food...

As the economy sours, many women who took time off to stay home with their children are reinventing themselves to re-enter the work force. Job recruiters say a resume gap doesn’t have to be a liability, but you need to actively market yourself and your skills. Develop an Internet strategy that will help you and your experience stand out. Here are some tips to get you started from Heather Cabot, Web life editor at Yahoo:
— Develop your online presence: People need to be able to find you on the Web if they’re going to hire you. Create a profile on LinkedIn.com, launch your own Web site or blog, or submit articles based on your professional expertise/or experience to...

What I say I want: Cheese.
What I really want: A cheese platter. And a glass of wine.
———
What I say I want: The laundry to be done.
What I really want: The laundry to be done by anybody but me. But correctly.

What I say I want: My bills paid off.
What I really want: My bills paid off, money in the bank, and to own that one house. Only with a bigger yard than that one house has.

What I say I want: A foot rub.
What I really want: A foot rub that also includes my back, shoulders, neck and maybe some of those...

Grilling is a popular cooking method because of its versatility and minimal post-meal cleanup. From meat and chicken to vegetables and fruit, almost everything tastes delicious when it’s grilled!
For this week’s family meal, use the grill for browning Barbecued Pork Chops and Grilled Sweet Potatoes. Serve with green beans for a simple and satisfying supper. Other recipes this week demonstrate the variety of foods and flavors made possible by grilling. Try combining traditional grilled fare like Spinach Salad with Grilled Chicken, Grilled Steak, or Pita, Cheese and Veggie Grill with the unexpected flavors of Balsamic Yogurt Grilled Vegetables, Grilled Fruit with...

Maybe it’s because we’ve been planning our summer vacation, but the idea of exotic place names sounds very appealing right now. Options can be found all over the map. A selection we’d like to visit, figuratively and literally:
AFRICA: Most obviously, the name of the continent, but there was also a Celtic queen named Affrica.
BIMINI: Caribbean Island name is cute and casual. Pronunciation: bim-in-ee.
BRAZIL: Also spelled Brasil, this Celtic saint’s name also references the South American country.
CUBA: Cuba Gooding Jr. put this one on the map (sorry, couldn’t resist). Another option: Havana.

Children who enjoy science develop strong analytical and problem-solving skills — skills that will serve them well throughout their lives. But how can parents help their children appreciate science and generate enthusiasm to discover the world around them?
Andy Allan, director of curriculum development at Champions Science Adventures summer camps, recommends taking science education out of the classroom and making it a hands-on experience.
Allan offers these tips to parents to help ignite their child’s interest in the world of science and discovery this summer:
— Children like to collect “things.” Encourage your child...

I’m a stay-at-home mom, but my kids go to a nursery school/day care two days a week. I staggered their schedule so each kid gets some one-on-one time with me once a week, but so I also have a day to myself. Not that I ever get to do anything fun on my kid-free day, unless you think getting the oil changed and the cat vaccinated is fun. Either way, the kids seem to really enjoy their school and I enjoy being able to go grocery shopping alone occasionally. Everybody wins!
The teachers and aides at the school have been nothing but warm and pleasant. In fact, one of them even moonlights as our weekend babysitter. Besides her, though, the only people who have ever watched my kids are relatives. When my mom or my sister-in-law...

“How many times do I have to say it?”
Mothers the world over use this favorite phrase, usually in escalating octaves of disbelief.
Help save her breath (and sanity) with the Mom-O-Matic. This handy little gadget, with a built-in speaker, will do her dirty work at the press of a button:
“It’s not your turn, honey.”
“I don’t care what he did!”
And the ever-distracting, “Look! A pony!”
(There also is a Dad-O-Matic, but, frankly, we’re not sure why.)
Get it for $12.95 from Catalogs.com.

An overweight child often has more than excess pounds to bear — they’re often taunted by peers and can suffer health problems, now and later.
We met with Dr. Doria Aguilar, a Miami Lakes, Fla., pediatrician with Palmetto General Hospital, to get some advice on how to keep our kids from getting fat. Overweight kids can experience body aches, joint pain and have a greater risk of high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol and heart disease. They can also have emotional problems, including self-esteem issues, depression and anxiety about food, activities, or even going out in public.
Aguilar’s passion for the issue is fueled by her own experience as an overweight teenager. She has since lost about 100 pounds and...

Dear Babs,
My daughter got into the local college, SUNY Buffalo, and we are so proud! Now that she is in we need to decide where she will be living. It is only a half-hour bus ride away, and living at home is more than feasible. However, she has gotten a lot of brochures on the dorms, and they look like fun. I want her to have the full college experience, but if she lives on-campus, she will have to take out loans. Will she miss out if she lives at home?
— Homemommy
Dear Homemommy,
Congratulations to your daughter, and kudos to you for being so concerned about her college experience.
