Practice 911 with your child

Posted by Lorain County Moms

By Chris Tiedje, South Florida Sun-Sentinel

As I was trolling through my morning reading ritual of scanning headlines, I stumbled across this on CBS News: “911 Dispatcher: Boy’s Call ‘Unbearable.’ ” Needless to say, I had to read it. I still have goosebumps from listening to the audio clip.

The part of the story which stuck out for me was the part about the 7-year-old’s ability to remain calm because his mother used to make him practice calling 911 in case of an emergency. Brilliant! This kid’s parents were being held at gunpoint right outside the bathroom where he was hiding, and yet this kid knew what do to and held it together. He probably saved all of their lives. Amazing.

I don’t know about you guys, but...

Michelle Obama talks anti-obesity to food giants

Posted by Lorain County Moms

The Associated Press

WASHINGTON — Michelle Obama is urging the nation’s largest food companies to speed up efforts to make healthier foods and reduce marketing of unhealthy foods to children.

Obama asked the companies, gathered at a meeting of the Grocery Manufacturers Association on Tuesday, to “step it up” and put less fat, salt and sugar in foods.

“We need you not to just tweak around the edges but entirely rethink the products you are offering,” she said.

The first lady has talked to schools and nutrition groups across the country in her effort to reduce childhood obesity. This is the first time she has confronted the food companies that make the snacks and junk food that stuff grocery aisles and school vending...

Teaching valuable lessons

Posted by Lisa Roberson

My children will tell you that I’m not just a reporter for eight hours a day, five days a week.

When I am not physically at work, I am trying to figure out ways I can use my job to teach them new things – things that will change their lives.

Last week’s unfortunate death of Elyria police Officer James “Jimmy” Kerstetter was no different.

For five days, nearly everything I wrote was about the 43-year-old officer who was killed in the line of duty. He died on Monday, March 15, while answering a call about a neighbor disturbance on the city’s south side.

His death immediately catapulted his family and the city into a state of mourning.

By Wednesday, I was honored with a sit-down interview with his family. It was an...

WASHINGTON — Evenflo is recalling 150,000 wooden gates that block stairways from young children.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission says the slats on Evenflo Top-of-Stair Plus gates can break or detach, allowing children to access the stairs.

The Mexican-made gates were sold online and by stores nationwide, including Toys “R” Us, Burlington Baby Depot and Kmart.

An additional 33,000 of these gates are being recalled in Canada.

Posted by Lorain County Moms

The Associated Press

WASHINGTON — More than 1 million baby slings made by Infantino were recalled Wednesday after claims linking them to three infant deaths.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission said babies could suffocate in the soft fabric slings. The agency urged parents to immediately stop using the slings for babies under 4 months.

The recall involves 1 million Infantino “SlingRider” and “Wendy Bellissimo” slings in the United States and 15,000 in Canada.

Infantino President Jack Vresics said the company has been working closely with the commission on its sling concerns.

Posted by Lorain County Moms

By Catherine Newman, Disney FamilyFun magazine

Giddyap! Keep your little neigh-sayer horsing around for days with this soulful steed, easily assembled in about an hour from a dowel and a fuzzy slipper sock. If clippety-clopping through the house loses its spark (unlikely), let him try a horseplay scenario or two. He can jump over foam blocks in a steeplechase course or compete in a toy animal rodeo, using a yarn lasso or tongs to corral that plastic cow as he trots by.

Ride’em cow-kid

Ages: 2 years and up

You will need:

  • 1 fuzzy slipper sock
  • Polyester stuffing
  • Needle and thread
  • Felt (we used off-white, yellow, and brown)
