Emergency-room professionals have their own name for the long, lovely, lazy days that kids look forward to in summer: trauma season. Because that’s when hospitals see a spike in drownings and heat-related accidents.
Here are some of the biggest misconceptions about popular summertime activities, according to several local experts.
MYTH: Pool parties are safe as long as adults are around.
FACT: Many drownings happen when adults are close by. The problem is too much commotion. The key is to have a designated adult watching the water because that is where the danger is. The pool should be free of excess toys that can block the view of the...

Madison Voirol, 14, sends text messages to her best friend every day. Madison recently moved to Yorktown, Va., with her family, which includes an Army-employed dad, so the girls now live states apart. But their friendship is staying strong, and Madison’s mom, Erin, has a theory to explain it.
“It’s been very good for our girls to see us argue and remain friends,” Erin says about her relationship with Madison’s playmate’s parents. “The girls have also argued. It is important to know that you’re not always going to get along with somebody, but it doesn’t mean that you don’t care for each other.”
Conflicts between parents of young playmates are...

Parents of toddlers may often wonder, who is this little creature who snacks constantly? Toddlers burn big energy but most aren’t big eaters. Many pick at meals or take just a few bites, leaving snacks as an important source of meal replacement.
Toddler snacks should be low in sugar and introduce little ones to a variety of foods. Parents packing on-the-go snacks may be tempted to stick to one item but there are helpful organizers that allow multiple foods to be toted.
The On-the-Go Travel Formula & Snack Dispenser from ZoLi is a stackable container with four compartments. Parents can fill four separate containers with different types of snacks and use the easy pour spout to quickly feed hungry toddlers.
The stacking...

LAS CRUCES, N.M. — A California woman shot and killed herself while driving in southern New Mexico after her 9-year-old daughter refused her mother’s request to kill her, authorities said.
The girl told investigators that her mother began to breathe heavily — possibly from an asthma or emphysema attack — and handed over a 9 mm handgun.
“She told her to shoot her. And she wouldn’t,” State police Lt. Roman Jimenez said. “The daughter said she has had these kinds of attacks before, but she’d never been suicidal.”
After the girl refused, the woman fired a shot into her own chest Thursday morning and the car rolled to a stop on the left shoulder of Interstate 10, about 25 miles west of Las Cruces. The girl was not...

How do you get a toddler to stay in bed at night? Here’s what local moms had to say:
“We gated ours in their rooms. Yeah, we had some crying, but they ultimately went to sleep.” — Bethifoody
“We tried the gates, but she climbs over them. She even climbed over 2 gates stacked on top of each other. We close her door at night because she likes it closed. But she’s gotten to the point where she can turn the knob and open it. We tried the childproof door-knob covers, but she takes them apart.” — Leftyloo1
“When the climbing began, we would close their door … & secure it (we would tie it to the bathroom door, so he couldn’t open it.). As SOON as it was quiet for a 5 or so minute stretch...

Most families with special-needs children do not attend worship services, say disability experts. Lora Knopf knows why.
Knopf’s 6-year-old daughter, Shelby, has cerebral palsy. She cannot walk or talk. A few years ago, Knopf remembered, she picked up Shelby at Sunday school and was approached by her daughter’s teacher. The teacher said she just didn’t know what to do about Shelby. They didn’t have a place for her, she said.
“She was basically asking us to find a new church,” said Knopf. “It was heartbreaking.”
Knopf believes many families with special-needs children stay away from worship services because they want to avoid a similar situation. “No family...

The blood pulsed through my head like a bullet train.
I was sitting on the floor in the bathroom, staring at my wall but not really seeing it. The little plastic stick sat feather-like in my hand, the blue plus sign at its tip weighing a thousand tons. My vision was swirling as my world capsized: I was too young. I had nothing. I wasn’t ready. My largest dream come true stared at me, all I ever wanted poised, ready for the larger embrace — the most perfect and frightening thing in the world — and still my brain screamed WHAT HAVE YOU DONE?
I was 22. I’d just graduated from college as a drama major. I had a part-time job at a bank, I was living in Los Angeles, taking acting classes and attempting...

My seven year old daughter has been schooled in the dangers of sexual predators and strangers in general since she was three. That was the year her preschool introduced her class to the obligatory good touch/bad touch curriculum that has been repeated every school year since and is routinely reinforced by first me and then her step-father and I at home.
“What if” and “What should you do” scenarios by the countless dozens were presented to Kat and she responded with the appropriate responses every single time.
Until it happened for real … and she failed.
She didn’t tell her Dad or me or a teacher or another trusted adult, and neither did the other two children who were with her...
