Join the anti-procrastination campaign

Posted by Lorain County Moms

By Marla Jo Fisher, The Orange County Register

Who says you don’t get anything from your children?

I used to feel guilty about procrastinating, and then I had kids. Now I have 10 times more things to put off doing than I ever did before.

When I was single, I had a lot fewer things to not get done, mostly involving picking up extra tequila for the weekly margarita party and changing the oil in my sportscar.

The fun thing about having kids is that the list of things you should do but don’t get around to expands exponentially.

In fact, I have found an entirely new category of things to not get done, including sifting through piles of too-small kids’ clothing and getting the teeth cleaned of a dog that the kids browbeat me into...

Kids’ docs urged to screen new moms for depression

Posted by Lorain County Moms

By The Associated Press

CHICAGO — An influential medical group says pediatricians should routinely screen new mothers for depression. Depression isn’t just bad for moms: It can also harm their babies.

That’s according to a new American Academy of Pediatrics report published Monday in the journal, Pediatrics. It cites research showing developmental and social delays in babies with depressed mothers.

The academy says that every year more than 400,000 babies are born to depressed women. Estimates say that between 5 percent and 25 percent of women develop postpartum depression.

The pediatrics academy says severely depressed women should be referred to experts for treatment.

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists...

Are texting and Facebook worse for teens than TV?

Posted by Lorain County Moms

By BETH J. HARPAZ, Associated Press

NEW YORK — Let’s face it: Teenagers spend hours texting, socializing on Facebook and playing video games. And it’s driving their parents nuts.

Sure, there are real dangers associated with all this screen time — everything from cyberbullying to couch-potato obesity. Not to mention driving while texting, shortened attention spans and Internet porn.

But many of today’s parents spent hours as kids sitting in front of screens too — only they were TV screens.

Which raises an interesting question: Is Facebook really worse for teenagers’ brains than the mindless reruns of “Gilligan’s Island” and “The Brady Bunch” that their parents consumed growing...

Study: Half of teens admit bullying in last year

Posted by Lorain County Moms

By ANDREW DALTON, Associated Press

LOS ANGELES — Half of high school students say they’ve bullied someone in the past year, and nearly half say they’ve been the victim of bullying, according to a national study released Tuesday.

The survey by the Los Angeles-based Josephson Institute of Ethics asked more than 43,000 high school students whether they’d been physically abused, teased or taunted in a way that seriously upset them. Forty-three percent said yes, and 50 percent admitted to being the bully.

The institute’s president, Michael Josephson, said the study shows more bullying goes on at later ages than previously thought, and remains extremely prevalent through high school.

“Previous to this, the evidence was...

Child Sense: Take the spooky’ out of Halloween for your little one

Posted by Lorain County Moms

By Priscilla J. Dunstan, McClatchy-Tribune

Just after the back-to-school sales end, the shelves start filling with Halloween costumes, ornaments and candy. The excitement starts for many children; so also starts many of the hidden fears that accompany the season of scares.

Although all children react in their own unique way, there are similarities to their interpretation based on their dominant sense. Use this to anticipate what will scare them, and how to alleviate their fears, quickly and constructively.

Tactile children will love the whole lead-up to Halloween. So many things to do and help with! Putting up decorations, trying on costumes and running around, putting candy into the bowls and carving pumpkins. It’s the “doing “of things...

What can you do with a Sharpie?

Posted by Lorain County Moms

LEANNE ITALIE, Associated Press Writer

Exhausted new moms use them to mark their twins. Doodlers on hyper-drive buy them to trick out their cars. Conan O’Brien morphed into one on Twitter, and Taylor Swift used one as eyeliner in a pinch.

It’s hard to find someone — anyone — who doesn’t love the hardworking Sharpie, excluding the loved ones of little wall-drawing Picassos.

Fans and fanatics are all over Flickr and YouTube showing off their collections of the endearing pens and a vast array of handiwork and Sharpie magic, but Glee’s Dianna Agron best summed up the Sharpie life in a blog apology over her saucy photos in GQ:

“I am trying to live my life with a sharpie marker approach. You can’t erase the strokes...

Not just for men anymore — more women embracing ‘mom caves’

Posted by Lorain County Moms

KIM COOK, For The Associated Press

Roxanne Jacoby has a guest room in her Pennsylvania home that no guest has ever slept in. It’s really her Mom Cave.

Outfitted with mementos and comfort items, it’s the only room in the house she really calls her own.

“I’ve put in an alpaca throw, down pillows, a fan, my favorite scented candle, and a whole bunch of stuff that I want to read,” says Jacoby.

It’s not like she couldn’t set all that up in a corner of the family room. But that “guest room” has an important feature: “I can close the door.”

Many women — and not just moms — are taking over some of the fallow ground at home and turning it into a haven to pursue personal pursuits....

Posted by Lorain County Moms

By The Associated Press

CLEVELAND — The Cleveland Orchestra plans to offer children under 18 free admission to many of its performances to help foster new generations of patrons.

Young adults ages 18 to 34 will be offered special online discounts in another part of an effort being announced Tuesday.

Orchestra executive director Gary Hanson tells The Plain Dealer newspaper the orchestra seeks to increase its “relevance” and build audiences.

Next summer, children under 18 will have free admission to lawn seating for performances at the Blossom Music Center amphitheater. The offer will eventually expand to some or all performances at the orchestra’s concert hall.

Chief marketing officer Ross Binnie says the orchestra wants to...
