Responding to inappropriate comments from your child

Posted by Lorain County Moms

By Priscilla J. Dunstan, McClatchy-Tribune

We have all experienced that moment of embarrassment when our child comments rudely on something they shouldn’t, and we rush to silence them and say our apologies. If what they have said is not untrue, just inappropriate; or something taboo and not to be commented on, this can be hard for a child to understand. Often appealing to their dominate sense both for what they say and also for how they hear, will give them the ability to create positive comments rather than the inappropriate ones.

For visual children what they see and how they are seen is extremely important....

How to teach kids about money

Posted by Lorain County Moms

By Beth Whitehouse, Newsday

Whether children are 5 or 15, parents can help them learn to handle money.

“To raise the financially savvy child, parents need to take an active role,” says Alex Matjanec, co-founder of MyBankTracker.com, a website that helps consumers research banks. Here are some suggestions:

Ages 5 to 9

Children probably have money from grandparents, aunts and uncles or the Tooth Fairy. Buy a piggy bank the child can paint or decorate instead of sticking money in a plastic jug, Matjanec advises.

Start simple, concrete lessons. At a restaurant, show children the check, talk about tip calculation, give them cash and let them pay and get change. As children...

McClatchy-Tribune

“Dear Tabby”
By Carolyn Crimi, illustrations by David Roberts

At first glance, this book is nothing more than a cutesy idea. However, “Dear Tabby” moves beyond its premise: An alley cat gives advice to pets seeking help with their owners, friends, siblings, and in matters of love. Tabby even tackles the big one: What’s the key to happiness?

The author, Carolyn Crimi, creates a running storyline throughout by making one of the letter writers an unhappy house cat who continues to write back with questions for Tabby. The charming illustrations by David Roberts also add to the story while Tabby is pondering a letter, we see...

Nothing makes you run away. Nothing makes you shake with shivers or quake with terror. Bring on the fear. You can take it. You’re a very brave kid.

By Merrie Leininger, McClatchy-Tribune

“Snow Rabbit, Spring Rabbit”

Parents who adore children’s books and place the best of them in the same category as fine art and prize-winning poetry will remember 2009′s “A Book of Sleep” by Il Sung Na. He is back this year with the equally beautiful “Snow Rabbit, Spring Rabbit,” which he again has both written and illustrated.

Tips for navigating breast-feeding challenges

Posted by Lorain County Moms

By Suzanne Perez Tobias, McClatchy-Tribune

Breast-feeding may be natural, but it doesn’t always come naturally.

Mothers who choose to breast-feed can face a host of challenges, including pain and insecurity in the early weeks, hassles at work or in public later on, and even disapproving remarks from friends or family.

“Women need to know it’s hard, but it’s worth it,” said Deniece Blasko, a Wichita, Kan., mother who is breast-feeding her fifth child, 1-year-old Lennon. “I wouldn’t trade this experience for any amount of money.”

Recently, the nation’s top doctor issued a call to eliminate obstacles to breast-feeding and encourage more women to nurse their babies.

The “Call to Action to...

When you were a little kid, you had some weird ideas.

For one thing, you were convinced that monsters lived beneath your bed or on the other side of every door. You seriously thought that if you worked hard, you could somehow gain superhero powers. And you believed that your toys could talk.

On that last one, come to think of it, you still sometimes wonder …
