“Snow Rabbit, Spring Rabbit”
By Il Sung Na
Random House Children’s Books, $15.99
For ages 1-5

Parents who adore children’s books and place the best of them in the same category as fine art and prize-winning poetry will remember 2009′s “A Book of Sleep” by Il Sung Na. He is back this year with the equally beautiful “Snow Rabbit, Spring Rabbit,” which he again has both written and illustrated.

The illustrations are whimsical and lovely, but also startlingly detailed. At first glance, you might think I’m overselling this book after all, it’s simply a book about what different animals do in the winter. But so many children’s books today simply throw everything they’ve got at you, with multiple typefaces and huge all-capital letters, so that you feel like you’re being screamed at, or watching MTV.

The peaceful, poetic language and pictures of “Snow Rabbit” are calming and charming, and make this perfect bedtime reading for your little ones.
