Resources out there for parents to help stop bullying

Posted by Lorain County Moms

By Colleen Jaskot, McClatchy-Tribune

Her daughter and another child were being bullied. So, she organized with other parents and planned community meetings for parents and students to talk about what was happening. She organized meetings for the public to raise awareness and talked with the school board about steps to take to prevent bullying.

Jacqui Knight, of Moore, Okla., is a mom who got involved when her child was being bullied.

“We just had to say, enough is enough,” Knight said.

About one-third of children experience bullying each year, according to the White House, and it can lead to academic failure, absence from school, drug and alcohol abuse, health problems and even suicide. Now, after a recent string of suicides related to...

Disney tips from experts and fans

Posted by Lorain County Moms

By Niesha Lofing, McClatchy Newspapers

“Mommy, we need to go to Disneyland.”

My son delivered this suggestion over a bowl of Cheerios, just after he and his little sister waged their daily war over which identical blue spoon they’d prefer.

Neither of my preschoolers remembered that their father and I had forked over hundreds of dollars to take them to the Happiest Place on Earth less than two years earlier. We’d taken turns pushing them in a stroller for miles through the park, arms aching, feet echoing the complaint.

Nostalgia, however, can wash away a parent’s pragmatic concerns. There’s nothing like the excitement of children who are meeting Mickey Mouse, the peals of laughter elicited by every dip of the boat...

Best rain boots for kids

Posted by Lorain County Moms

By Merrie Leininger, McClatchy-Tribune

It’s spring, and it looks like it might be one filled with downpours and sprinkles, so we’ve collected the coolest and best boots out there that will let your kid keep puddle jumping while staying dry.

Hatley Rain Boots, $35

These boots are great for younger kids because they have grippy rubber soles and big looped handles that make them easy to pull on. Cotton lining adds extra comfort. Our favorites are these pink-and-brown Desert Horses boots, but they also have styles with watermelons, bugs, dogs and butterflies. They come in sizes 6-13 and are available at www.hatleystore.com.

LL Bean Wellies, $44

These boots have...

Royal baby names fit for a prince

Posted by Lorain County Moms

nameberry.com

Last week, we came up with our suggestions for the name of the first baby daughter of Prince William and his bride. With the variety of girl name possibilities, it was relatively easy — almost an embarrassment of riches — but with the boys, there’s a far less fertile field, especially if we stick within our strict confines of names used in British royal history. (Thank goodness for all those middle names!)

Most of the kings’ and princes’ names were repeated over and over again — Edward (William’s uncle), Charles (William’s father), George (numerous ancestors), Albert, Arthur John, and the name William itself.

But of course, whatever name they choose, kings often do take a different name to rule by than their...

Butterfly bounty: Makes these cute little springtime treats for your kids’ class

Posted by Lorain County Moms

Disney FamilyFun magazine

Whether you’re packing a snack for a trip to the park or making a treat for your preschooler’s entire class, these fluttery friends are sure to charm. The bags can be filled with any snack, though a mix that offers a blend of colors and shapes makes for a more interesting butterfly.

For each bag, decorate one side of a clothespin (we used glitter glue). Glue two small googly eyes near the gripping end of the clothespin and let the glue dry. Put small crackers, dried fruit, trail mix, or whatever else you’d like into a snack-size Ziplock bag until it’s about half full. Seal the bag, cinch the middle with your fingers, and clip it with the clothespin. Fold down the tips of a 4 ½-inch length of pipe cleaner, then...

Vaccines, your baby and you: The childhood immunization schedule

Posted by Lorain County Moms

By Laura A. Jana MD, FAAP and Jennifer Shu, MD, FAAP, HealthyChildren.org

The following is an excerpt from “Heading Home With Your Newborn: From Birth to Reality” (Second Edition):

Each year leading pediatric and infectious disease experts put together the standard childhood immunization schedule. This schedule is admittedly a busy one, involving a master multiyear rollout plan for your baby’s many vaccines.

While this would be the time when we’d ideally proceed to lay out a nice, simple timeline for you to follow, the reality is that this timeline changes a little bit each year based on the latest scientific information available, and the schedule is created with a certain degree of flexibility. What we can tell you is that...

‘Glee’ isn’t so gleeful anymore

Posted by Lorain County Moms

By Marla Jo Fisher, The Orange County Register

Dear Glee,

You’ll never know how much it hurts me to write this letter. But if you don’t change back to the way you were, I’m going to have to break up with you.

I didn’t mind if you fooled around a little because, after all, teens are into experimentation.

And I don’t object to boys kissing boys or girls kissing girls, that’s just a reflection of real life.

But enough with the soft-core porn. If that’s how you’re going to roll, I will have to stop seeing you.

Believe me, I was so happy when you came into our lives, giving me a show that my tweens and I all liked, instead of nauseating Disney Channel tripe with a canned laugh track that always...

New author contest welcomes original children’s books

Posted by Lorain County Moms

McClatchy Newspapers

If you’ve toyed with the idea of writing a book for children, here’s some impetus: Cheerios — as in the General Mills breakfast cereal — is sponsoring its annual New Author Contest. It’s “seeking the next great children’s book author, and encourages ambitious authors nationwide to submit an original story, in either English or Spanish, for children ages 3 to 8.”

The winner will be $5,000 richer and may land a publishing contract with Simon & Schuster. Also, the new author will have his/her book promoted inside Cheerios boxes in 2012.

For guidelines and entry information, go to www.spoonfulsofstoriescontest.com; deadline is July...

Advice for moms who want to go into business

Posted by Lorain County Moms

By Anne Leedom, Hybrid Mom

You are excited … you have a great new service and you are ready to start putting it all together and make it work. However, when it comes to really putting all the pieces in place you aren’t completely certain on how to start. So let’s take a look at some of the most common mistakes people make and what you can do to avoid them.

  1. Work with people who have a proven track record. All too often we want to work with friends or referrals and in many cases that means two things. You will be working with people who will not charge you huge fees, as they are “helping you,” and you will often be working with people who don’t know your product, market and specific demographic to get you where you want to...
