By Kathy Witt, McClatchy-Tribune

This summer, Thomas the Tank Engine and Sir Topham Hatt will join Dorothy, Scarecrow, Tin Man and Cowardly Lion and Toto, too in Bardstown, Ky., a small town known far and wide as “The Bourbon Capital of the World” owing to its preeminent spot on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail. Liquid gold pedigree aside, Bardstown will greet families with beloved characters and childhood favorites and plenty of opportunities for making scrapbook-worthy memories.

With its dining car exhibit, ticket office and display of steam locomotive whistles, the Kentucky Railway Museum has an excellent and far-reaching collection of railroad artifacts and memorabilia but for kids, the main attraction will be Thomas the Tank Engine. The classic...

Book review: ‘A pet for Miss Wright’

Posted by Lorain County Moms

“A Pet for Miss Wright” by Judy Young, illustrated by Andrea Wesson
c.2011, Sleeping Bear Press
$15.95 / $17.95 Canada
32 pages

Imagine if you went to school and you were the only kid in class.

You’d have to read to yourself and play games alone. There’d be nobody to practice spelling with. Nobody to draw or color with. Nobody to laugh at your stupid jokes.

Going to school all alone would be weird. And it would be no fun.

Baby names: Hidden gems on your own Facebook page

Posted by Lorain County Moms

nameberry.com

As a certified UNN (ultimate name nerd), I of course seek out lists of interesting names wherever I go. But it didn’t occur to me until recently that I was being served up a whole new menu of unusual names almost every other day right on my own computer screen that I’d never really noticed.

Like most of us, I get regular notices on my Facebook page alerting me to People You May Know, followed by an invitation to “see all” — not to mention all the frequent “X is now friends with” updates. Well, one day I did attempt to see all, scrolling through the names of the friends of my friends. I didn’t make it all the way through (curses on those with 4,000-plus friends!), but I did get far enough to come up with...

Book review: ‘My Mom, Style Icon’

Posted by Lorain County Moms

By Colleen Jaskot, McClatchy-Tribune

Moms take the brunt of a lot of our anger, blame and mocking. Plus, you won’t friend her on Facebook. Pay her back for all the good she has done for you with the touching new book, “My Mom, Style Icon,” by Piper Weiss (Chronicle Books, $18.95).

This book sprang from Weiss’ blog about her stylish mother that inspired others to submit stories about their mothers. Like with Weiss, many women found discovering who their mother was before she was a mother was a revelation and opened up conversations they’d never been able to have before. You can see the blog at http://momstyleicons.blogspot.com/....

Posted by Lorain County Moms

By Priscilla J. Dunstan, McClatchy-Tribune

Here are some tips for helping your child make the most of the day of celebration

Tactile children will prefer arts and crafts that they can wear and wave or show off. So put them to work making patriotic hats, flags and banners, or decorating their bike and the picnic hamper with red, white and blue streamers.

Instead of just watching your local parade, see if there is some way your tactile child could participate. A lot of parades have sections for kids to...

Mom pleading to state panel today for anti-bullying law

Posted by Lorain County Moms

COLUMBUS — An Ohio mother who says taunting over a nude cell phone picture led to her teen daughter’s suicide was to testify before a state legislative panel Wednesday in favor of anti-bullying legislation.

An Ohio House panel is reviewing a bill named after Cynthia Logan’s daughter. The “Jessica Logan Act” would require public schools to expand their bullying policies to prohibit harassment by cell phones, computers and other electronic means.

Under the bill, school administrators could discipline students who “cyberbully” on buses and off school grounds. Schools would also be required to provide anti-cyberbulling training to teachers.

Jessica Logan’s parents say the 18-year-old hanged herself in 2008 after weeks of ridicule at her...
