Tips on converting little kid room to teen space

NEW YORK — That cute duckie wallpaper or nautical furniture set were great for your child’s baby years and just barely tolerable through elementary school, but a bedroom makeover is hard to get around when a child heads for the tumultuous teens.

Consider the four C’s — classic, comfort, cool and color — when providing older kids with long-lasting lairs, er, lovely hangout-study spaces. And keep in mind a transformation doesn’t have to mean tossing everything and buying all new.

Spending selectively now may just carry your child through the college years and beyond, to their first apartment, said design guru Nate Berkus, host of the syndicated “Nate Berkus Show.”

Missing the commotion and chaos of family-filled holidays

Another holiday has come and gone, leaving behind memories and photos (and a lot of leftovers). And while I should be happy for the things my family has, I can’t help but to feel a bit sad. I feel sad this Monday after Easter, as I feel after every holiday, birthday, and special occasion, for my children.

I guess I would classify my childhood as dysfunctional, although I got through it just fine. I only classify it as that because I watched my mom go through 3 divorces. My dad lived out of state and so I didn’t get to spend holidays with him to often, except maybe once or twice. After my mother’s second divorce in 1987 we moved to Elyria from Columbus.

Happy to be a stay-at-home mom — even if it wasn’t by choice

Why do I freeze every time someone asks me what I do or who my employer is? It really should not be a hard question to answer, but it is one I struggle with everyday. My dilemma is quite simple. Am I a Stay at Home Mom (SAHM), or am I unemployed? Can I be both?

Here are the facts. On January 2, 2009, I was no longer employed. Was it by choice: no. Nice way to start a New Year, huh? So on January 5, 2009, I got up as I always did when I was employed and made my husband coffee and a lunch to take to work. But instead of packing a diaper bag for the sitter, or taking a shower and putting on work attire, I brushed my teeth, my hair, and sat and played with my kids.
