Rules for dating a single mom

I’m a mom and I date.

Now, the two things may seem like they are somewhat related, but in my mind they are two completely, separate parts of my life.

My kids are my main priority always. They wow me with their intelligence, make me laugh out loud with their humor and unnerve me with their constant pursuits to usurp the monarchy that is my household.

I may be single, but I am not looking for a new “baby’s daddy.” My need for male companionship does not mean anything in regards to my children. Unlike some women, I shield them from the outside world of dudes like a mother lion that guards her cubs from poachers.

Am I a good mom?

“Am I a good mom?”

It’s a simple question in my book, but every time I pose it to my very opinionated 9-year-old daughter, she looks at me as if I asked her if I have hair growing out of my ears. She wrinkles her forehead, cocks her head to the side and simply says “Yeah” in a tone that I take is a mixture of confusion and annoyance.

Maybe, I do ask it at weird times.

Like in the middle of combing her hair or as I am driving her to school because she’s late for the 10th time or when she is laying in my lap as we watch some program she picked on the Disney Channel. (How many times can we watch the same episodes of Hannah Montana or Wizards of Waverly Place?)
