Want to give your child and yourself a gift that will keep giving all year long? Sign your family up for the BabbaBox, a monthly box of activities that includes crafts, games, stories and a way to enjoy the outdoors.
The BabbaBox was invented by a working mom who was trying to teach her daughter about the life of a butterfly. Jessica Kim thought by doing a craft together they could learn at the same time — but Kim wound up with 400 googly eyes when she only needed two, and 60 pipe cleaners when she only needed four.
She figured there has to be a better way to engage kids and connect with while teaching them, and created BabbaBox, a monthly club that sends you a box full of all the ingredients needed for creative, fun projects for...

Looking at a yellow jacket up close without worrying about getting stung is kind of cool.
You can look right in its face and eyes and see its lance-like stinger. It’s cool to just watch the bug’s habits.
It’s the same thing with spiders and other bugs. It’s kind of creepy to watch them, but fun.
You can really learn a lot about bugs with an Uncle Milton Bug Jug Live Insect Viewer.
No kidding. I stumbled on this thing while shopping for birthday presents for my grandkids, and I got two jugs.
I wasn’t sure how they would go over in this age of technology, but the Bug Jug was really popular on a recent camping trip.
My grandson and I collected yellowjackets, black...

Many parents accept the inevitable — small children are going to trash their car. Parents plan on smudge marks on the back of the passenger seat from constant kicks, imprints on the back seat from the weight of the car seat, and crumbs scattered on the floor from incessant snacking.
But most parents don’t plan on their car getting hit with a toy tornado. Action figures on the floor, crayons wedged between seat — toys everywhere.
A backseat caddy can help parents organize toys within a child’s reach and insist children put their items back in the caddy when leaving the car.
Sunshine Kids Travel Pal is a car caddy that holds drinks, books, and small toys. The caddy is about seven inches wide and can fit between two car...

In January, the U.S. Surgeon General issued a call to action about breastfeeding. Surgeon General Regina M. Benjamin said breastfeeding helps protect infants from infections and illnesses. Benjamin cited a study in the journal Pediatrics that estimates the U.S. could save $13 billion a year if babies were protected from such illness and infection.
Most American women begin breastfeeding after childbirth, but only 13 percent of babies are exclusively breastfed by six months of age, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.
Many feeding aids are available to help mothers increase feeding ease and comfort. The Natural Boost from Leachco is a feeding pillow placed on the mother’s lap. The pillow has...

For some new moms, back pain does not end after labor. Carrying newborns can stress the back as new moms lift a seven to 10 pound baby as many as 50 times a day.
As the child grows heavier, the American Academy of Orthopedic surgeons advises new moms not to carry their child on their hip because it can stress back muscles.
New moms are advised to wear child carriers in the front. When hiking or enjoying outdoor activities, moms may want to opt for a back carrier so baby is protected during a front fall.
The Kelty TC 2.0 is a dual child carrier and knapsack. The carrier has an adjustable harness, padded should straps and a waist belt to help distribute weight evenly. It also has a padded back panel for comfort...

Expecting mothers take note. There’s no need for alarm but pregnant women should be aware that cosmetics are absorbed into the bloodstream and shared with the fetus.
Women are advised to avoid products containing retinoids and salicylic acid, though there is no solid research indicating these ingredients cause serious problems.
Expecting mothers worried about chemical exposure can eliminate a significant amount of concerning ingredients by opting for natural or organic cosmetics. There are several companies offering natural options.
For lip color, Kiss My Face has two organic options. The SOS Sheer Organic Shimmer is a Lip Tint that comes in a sleek, solid stick. It is available in six colors and costs $4.95...

NEW YORK — As Top 10 list season winds down and awards season cranks up, Good Housekeeping named some winners of a different sort Tuesday.
A handful of gadgets, gizmos and gear that saved us time and made our lives easier in 2010 received VIPs, for “very innovative products,” after hands-on testing by the white-coated folks at the magazine’s research institute.
The iPad topped the annual list of 10, but the wildly popular tablet was joined by a few less obvious choices: Coleman’s Instant Tent, Dyson’s bladeless fan, Method’s highly concentrated laundry detergent and the Goody Spin Pin, an inexpensive corkscrew bobby pin to secure updos with ease.
The researchers and engineers...
