ELYRIA – Elyria Schools’ full-day kindergarten program is once again growing.
What started out 11 years as just 11 classrooms at the district’s administrative building in what was christened Kindergarten Village will grow to 25 classrooms at six locations throughout the district next school year. Due to the success of the program, the district is adding full-day kindergarten at both Ely and McKinley elementary schools next year, said Mark Sutter, director of academic services.

My son Jack is having a tough time in kindergarten this year. Most of this is due to his disability — he’s autistic and needs a lot of support. My husband and I, Jack’s teachers, and Jack’s aides think he needs a one-to-one aide, meaning it would be someone’s job to sit next to him all day and make sure he can learn with the rest of the class and remain safe.
We have a meeting scheduled for this week at which time we will be presenting our case to Jack’s educational team, as well as representatives from the district. This is the second meeting we’ve had about this issue. At the first meeting, everyone who works with Jack on a daily basis (and me, his mother) said he needs one-to-one support. Then the special education supervisor...

We’ve had a tough couple weeks in our family.
My daughter, who gleefully attended two years of preschool, is fighting tooth and nail about going to school every day. In her words: She doesn’t like it, she gets in trouble all the time, she hates it, it’s awful.
I’m not sure there are too many things worse than seeing a kindergarten student sobbing each night — telling you she doesn’t want to get up and go to school the next day. It’s awful, and no matter what we’ve said to her, she hasn’t given up the fight.
So last week, her father and I dutifully visited the school – I talked to her teacher on Thursday,...

A weekly glimpse of what moms are saying on the Web.

“Sam had his first day (of school) with ‘lots of kids and lots of teachers and also, time-out chairs.’ This was a big deal on all fronts but mostly because in Sam’s case we don’t get sitters and we don’t have close-by family and honestly, it took a good three years for us to leave him with our dear friends... Our oldest has his first day of third grade this week. It’s a crazy week where, armed with a sharpie, I’m now organizing two backpacks. Our middle child, Ethan, is starting Kindgarten Monday. Big GULP! I’m going through all the same “I can’t believe my widdle BABY is starting school!!” stuff I did with our oldest.
Seriously – I can’t believe it! He’s five but he’s very small for his age. He’s also very mellow and easy going and that just makes him seem sooooo much more vulnerable to me. So far I’ve been doing alright in front of him, but the way he clung to me during orientation doesn’t bode well.
“Mommy, can we LEAVE yet – I’m BORED!” he asked me in a stage...

Long before the guys came along, I’d dream of the moment:
A freshly scrubbed 5-year-old trudges up the sidewalk on a crisp September day. He reluctantly loosens his death grip on my hand and heads for the classroom door. He turns and waves hesitantly as I flick aside a delicate tear. My baby’s first day of kindergarten!
I’m not capable of dreams wild enough to conjure up Tuesday’s reality:
Four-year-old Big Guy bounced out of bed on a 96-degree July morning, cheering, “It’s time! It’s today!” I swiped at the chocolate milk on his face, but he was half-way down the block on his scooter before I could catch him.

OK, I’m officially in panic mode.
My soon-to-be-kindergartner is all ready to go — she has her school supplies, she has her new school shoes and clothes and has her very stylish High School Musical backpack (after 30 minutes of deliberation between that one and one depicting Hannah Montana) — pretty much everything she needs to be thoroughly prepared for Day One.
The problem?
I realized that I — the working Mom who has a marvelous babysitter who takes care of all the things that I let slide — will have to pack her a lunch each day.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — My daughter will turn 5 years old two days before the new school year starts.
I didn’t think about this much when she entered her first year of preschool, but now as she is about to start kindergarten I suddenly started questioning whether or not she is truly ready.
It all started when I was chatting with some of the other preschool moms one day. We were comparing our children’s letter writing.
