My daughter is a miracle. From conception to birth she battled to be born. Even now, as we gaze into each other’s eyes when she nuzzles and nurses, I’m amazed she is really, truly here.
Still, I can’t get enough of her and nibble her tender toes, cheeks and belly. Her skin is warm and sweet. I rub my face against her downy auburn hair and am thankful she’s alive. I’m relieved we both survived.
Getting pregnant wasn’t easy. I suffered secondary infertility after the birth of my oldest son and was diagnosed at 27 with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS). My odds of conceiving again were very slim and that would be with the help of fertility aids.
One doctor told me it...

I’ve noticed a disturbing phenomenon going on in my head recently.
It’s the obsession with having a second child. No, it’s not the weird biological baby fever that takes over women’s rational minds in nature’s effort to perpetuate the species. In actuality, I’m not entirely sure I want another baby. And therein lies the obsession.
At this point in my life, I feel like having another baby would be about as easy as suddenly having to go through life with a complete loss of my eyesight. That is, I could do it, but it would be excruciatingly difficult. Still, the second baby thoughts run...

I am a caffeine addict. My love has led me to devote many a Twitter, text message and verbal declaration to it.
Seriously.
I’ve stood on a mountaintop and sworn my unwavering I-would-die-for-you loyalty to Mr. Coffee — and pledged to run away with him if he’d have me.
Fortunately, the mountain was a pile of laundry and Jimmy didn’t take my philandering meanderings to heart. In fact, he handed me another cup of joe and probably hoped I’d use the jolt to wash and fold the towels I was so elegantly stomping.
Blah, pwah and patooey! “What...

Before her pregnancy, Jennifer Lucero of Mountain House, Calif., hit the gym four days a week. She’d lift weights. Ride the elliptical. But once she was expecting, Lucero, who is also a vegetarian, wondered if she’d have to adjust her workout and possibly her diet, especially according to the theories of her parents and grandparents.
“I knew I’d definitely hear it from everyone about iron and meat for the baby,” says Lucero, who is nearing her due date.
But when she consulted her obstetrician, she was encouraged to change very little. She cut her gym visits by two days and replaced them with yoga and walking. Her diet — rich in...

The time for bump-baring bikinis has come to an end, but the cooler temps mean tons of fresh maternity styles to show off your newfound curves. To make the most of (and have fun with!) your fall wardrobe, check out these tips from Hannah Macdonald and SaSaDi Odunsi, fashion gurus and owners of urban maternity boutique Bump Brooklyn.
GO NATURAL
Expect to see even more organic clothing lines and a new appreciation of all things earthy. Last week while grocery shopping at Trader Joe’s, a woman I didn’t know came up to me and said, “Look at the size of you! You must be due any day now!” I could feel my face turning red as I responded, “Ummm, I’m actually not due until December.”
While rushing to catch a flight at Midway Airport last weekend, a cashier asked me how far along I was. When I replied, “about six months,” she said, “Oh my God, you are so big and fat already!” I gave an embarassed smile, paid for my water, and walked away feeling absolutely terrible about myself.
These are just two examples of the types of comments that people feel free to make the...

QUESTION: I had awful morning sickness with both of my boys. I was nauseous for the entire nine months while pregnant with James. I could eat certain foods the entire time, but couldn’t eat things like sandwiches and meats. Even toothpaste would make me gag. Anything lemony (lemonade, chicken with lemon, lemon spaghetti, etc.) made me feel a little better. With Jackson I was only sick for the first 15 weeks, but it was the throwing up 24/7 kind of sick. I had a horrible taste in my mouth every second and nothing was appealing. The only thing that made me feel better was the second trimester!! What has worked for you? How did you cope with morning sickness?

RESPONSES:
— When I was pregnant with my DD, I was queasy nearly all the time, though I never actually got sick. I kept a tin of sour Altoids in my purse (along with plastic bags, because I was thoroughly convinced that I’d get sick on the Metro (subway) while commuting). I also got ginger chews. They’re vile, but they were effective in calming my stomach.

With your belly getting bigger and bigger just as we head into summer, you may find yourself wondering if you’ll make it out alive. But don’t worry — while it’s true that a summer pregnancy isn’t always easy, here are a few tricks to ease your hot-weather woes.
Summer Bummer No. 1: Dehydration
Getting enough fluids is especially tough in the hot summer months. Ordinarily, you should try to drink two liters of clear liquids every day, but in the summer, you need to add eight ounces for every hour you spend in the heat, according to NYC nutritionist Lara Englebardt Metz, MS, RD, CDN. That’s basically the amount you’ll be sweating out.
Cool Fix: Icy concoctions

ORLANDO — My alarm clock goes off, but there is no way I am getting out of bed. Just a few months ago, I would have been up quickly and changing into my tank top and shorts, looking forward to my morning spinning class.
Now, there is no such thing as getting up quickly. Ever since I found out I was having a baby, my body moves more slowly, my energy level stays at a decaffeinated level, and my waistline increases every time I look at my belly. At least it feels that way.
I thought back to my first visit to the doctor. I asked about keeping my intense workout routine, which featured running, spinning, kickboxing and weight training.
He looked at me and said, “I wouldn’t recommend that.”
“You’re joking, right?” I was near tears.
